He was commissioned to celebrate the rediscovery of AEDES PERFUMERY and move to 16A Orchard Street on New York City's "Lower" Lower East Side, a vibrant neighborhood created by galleries, skaters, cafes and small, exclusive stores that attracts a modern and diverse crowd
crackling energy and excitement
In 2021, it took on a deeper meaning for Robert Gerstner and Karl Bradl, founders of AEDES DE VENUSTAS
"Every soul has experienced a major change in their life," Gerstner says
"During this time, we have put down roots
Here in this neighborhood that represents the turnover of New York City, we have unwittingly done something much more significant
It's not just the smell, it's the feeling
It's something that feeds and then grows
"I aimed to create a sense of emotional well-being through a simple scent structure," says perfumer Frank Voelkl
"The use of ingredients derived from natural roots, such as ginger and irises, connects us to the earth, making us feel grounded and centered
But instead of recognizing a single note or category of fragrances, the 16A ORCHARD is presented in a somewhat mysterious way
You don't know what to do right away, and that's what makes it interesting," Gerstner said
That's the essence of the Lower East Side
It teaches you to think and age is unorthodox
Earthly materials become airy in Voelkl's hands
Ginger raises questions, leads you astray
Iris brings you back into focus, revealing cold yet tender qualities
Quince and muge strengthen the roots
Dry cedarwood and cashmere-like tonka create a spicy, dry roundness for more fleeting notes of bergamot, lemon, cardamom and jasmine
The AEDES DE VENUSTAS 16A ORCHARD is presented in a precious container: a fluted glass bottle marked with peacock blue accents, a lid stamped with matte black emblems, and a sleek yet heavy design that marks the next chapter in the AEDES DE VENUSTAS story
Notes: Ginger, iris, bergamot, lemon, cardamom, quince, jasmine, mug, musk, suede, ambrox, tonka bean
